“Through The Darkness”

by Paul Gehl

As good as Paul Gehl’s previous single “Train To Nowhere”was, his latest single, “Through The Darkness”, is even better. Like its predecessor, “Through The Darkness” also draws from the hard rock of the early seventies, mainly Osbourne’s Black Sabbath but the truth of the matter is that all the greats from that era, including Ken Hensley’s Uriah Heep and Jimmy Page’s Led Zeppelin, would have been proud to jam with Gehl.

As is evident from his music, Gehl is both a fantastic singer and a truly great guitarist. His playing resembles his singing in that it’s nuanced and sophisticated … there are multiple layers of detail in his performances. In fact, no matter how many times you play his tracks, you keep discovering something new with each spin. For instance, pay attention to how he switches registers when “Through The Darkness” moves into its bridge with the line “riding high, riding fast”. And while you are at it, don’t forget to marvel at the wah-wah guitar solo that kicks in roughly halfway through this eight-minute epic. It’s all pretty spectacular stuff.

The point that I'm trying to make here is that anyone with a palate for retro hard rock will find Paul Gehl’s music irresistible. I know I do.
