Aaaaah … now that's what I call alternative rock.
”Desert Roll” by A Violet In Youth hits all the right spots if you appreciate smart alternative rock. It's got beautiful vocals that come and go in the mix while the band paints an arty but absolutely gorgeous sonic landscape that's dominated by adventurous and bold guitars.
It's all very original. The track reminds you of the psychedelic sixties but also bares uncanny resemblance to the unpretentious nineties. It's hard to pinpoint what this music is but one thing's for sure, it's so filled with all sorts of compelling vocal and instrumental hooks that it's hard to decide what to prioritize when you are listening. I mean this as high praise. The band themselves describe their music as ”dissonant yet beautiful”. I concur. This is a very accurate description.
”Desert Roll” as well as its more subdued flipside "Exactly" (also a great track!) are creative and progressive indie rock with a pop edge that merits repeated listens. And no matter how many times you play the tunes on this single, you always seem to discover something new. The release is simply put superb!
