Listening to “Boy” by Baldy Crawlers is an intimate experience. I don’t know how else to describe it. If you dim the lights and close your eyes, it feels like guitarist/songwriter Martin Maudal’s ensemble is performing just for you. This is partly because of the organic and dream-like feel the band manages to create but also because of Maudal’s introspective poetry about a life lived … the heartache and loss … “everything the world has ever felt”.
Even though esoteric at times, it’s easy to identify with what Maudal’s lyric appears to be insinuating: Life will get you dirty, especially if you travel off the beaten track. And if there’s one thing “Boy” oozes with, it’s bitter sweet memories and acceptance of unpredictability. As John Lennon once put it, “Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans”.
Perhaps it’s the rich and warm lead guitar that shines throughout, or the soft and nuanced vocals by Elizabeth Hangan that make “Boy” such a standout. It’s hard to say. All I know is that once you press play, the song captivates you. It’s that good, quite brilliant in fact.
