"If I Was A Road" by Jeff Hodges

Although blues-rock hasn’t made much of an impact on the Billboard Top 100 for quite some time, it remains fantastic music—especially when performed by someone like Jeff Hodges, who truly knows what he’s doing. That’s the thing about any genre that falls under “roots music”: in the wrong hands, it can be a disaster; in the right ones, it becomes something close to magic. “If I Was a Road” is one of those magic moments. It oozes ’70s blues-rock authenticity and, most importantly, it’s simply a great track.

There’s a dichotomy here worth mentioning, because as a listener, you’re torn between where to focus as the song bursts through your speakers. On one hand, there’s Hodges’ brilliant, soulful vocal performance; on the other, there’s a smoking-hot band. Every accent lands exactly where it should, the guitars blaze, the Hammond licks sizzle, and the electric piano that opens the track sets the tone perfectly. It's terrific.

“If I Was a Road” delivers a message many can relate to: life gets you dirty and leaves you broken. While any fan of blues or roots music will fall in love with Hodges’ latest offering, this song feels especially resonant for those of us who carry the tire marks and scars he sings about. We’re proud of them—and of the road we’ve traveled. Not because of the destination we’ve reached, but because of the journey itself, both good and bad. It’s made us who we are—and if we’re honest, we wouldn’t change a damn thing.
